Silver Casting: The Art Behind Every Handmade Jewellery Piece
Every piece of jewellery begins as an idea, but turning that idea into solid silver is where true craftsmanship begins. Silver casting is one of the most fascinating stages of jewellery making, allowing designers to transform detailed wax models into wearable works of art.
At SONYJA, every design is handcrafted in the UK using recycled sterling silver, combining traditional jewellery techniques with contemporary sculptural design inspired by nature, architecture and modern forms.

What Is Silver Casting?
Silver casting is a jewellery-making technique that allows molten sterling silver to fill a carefully prepared mould. Once the metal cools and solidifies, the mould is removed, revealing the silver piece ready for finishing.
This process captures incredibly fine textures and details that would be difficult to create by hand alone.
From Wax Model to Sterling Silver
The journey begins with a hand-carved wax model. This wax prototype is carefully shaped to achieve the desired design, proportions and textures.
The wax is then placed inside a special casting material, creating a mould around it. During heating, the wax melts away, leaving an empty cavity that perfectly matches the original design.
Molten recycled sterling silver is then poured into the mould at temperatures exceeding 960°C, filling every detail.
Once cooled, the casting material is removed to reveal the newly formed silver jewellery.
Why Handmade Casting Makes Every Piece Special
Unlike mass-produced jewellery, handmade casting preserves the individuality of every design.
Small variations naturally occur during the process, making every piece unique while maintaining exceptional quality.
At SONYJA, many designs feature organic textures inspired by:
Natural stones
Leaves
Weathered surfaces
Architectural structures
Modern sculpture

These textures become permanently captured in sterling silver through the casting process.
Finishing the Jewellery
Casting is only the beginning.
Each piece is then:
Hand cleaned
Filed and refined
Sanded through multiple grades
Polished by hand
Hallmarked where required
Carefully inspected before being packaged
Some designs also receive gemstones or pearls after polishing, completing the finished piece.
Why We Use Recycled Sterling Silver
Sustainability is an important part of our jewellery making.
Using recycled sterling silver reduces the need for newly mined precious metals while maintaining exactly the same beauty, durability and quality as newly refined silver.
Our jewellery is handcrafted from 925 sterling silver, making it suitable for everyday wear while offering timeless elegance.
Contemporary Jewellery Inspired by Nature and Architecture
At SONYJA, silver casting allows us to create sculptural jewellery that cannot be achieved through traditional fabrication alone.
From organic forms inspired by nature to bold architectural shapes, every collection celebrates texture, movement and modern design.
The result is contemporary jewellery that feels artistic, distinctive and designed to last for years.
